Why Repair Ruts And Tire Tracks

Why repair ruts and tire tracks around your property? Because no matter how soft your tractor seat might be, dealing with a bumpy ride while doing your work can be a real pain in the . . . seat. Besides being uncomfortable, it can impact how effectively you can actually do your work.

That’s the case where we’ll start working by this property owner’s round bale storage area. Theirs is a very active cow/calf/hay operation, and the weather this spring was pretty wet. Now that things have dried out, tire tracks made by their tractors on wet ground have hardened making for a mighty bumpy ride.

So we’ll use a John Deere 5100R Utility Tractor (US CA) and a Frontier RB2308 Rear Blade (US CA) to which we’ve added a pair of bolt-on end plates. That basically turns this 96-inch (244 cm) rear blade into a 96-inch box blade, which will give our operator, Digger Dan, more control in moving that soil around. We’ve also added front and rear wheel weights, a John Deere 540R Loader (US CA), and 73-inch (185 cm) Material Bucket.

As you might imagine, this is a pretty simple project. Dan will run the rear blade over the tire tracks, both parallel with them and at an angle, knocking down the ridges, and moving soil around to fill in the rutted areas and create a more even surface. The end plates on the rear blade will carry more soil to fill in deep ruts and keep the rear blade from digging in too deep.

The important thing is to be patient and not start this project too soon. If the ground is too wet, you’ll just be making new tire tracks while you’re trying to smooth out the old ones. So make sure the soil is dry enough that you can move it effectively, eliminating the ruts, and not making new ones in the process.

And lastly, always read the Operator’s Manual before operating any piece of equipment and follow all operating and safety instructions.

Frontier’s nearly 400 implements and attachments are designed, engineered, tested, and manufactured to fit and work with John Deere tractors. That’s a breadth and depth of John Deere and Frontier equipment compatibility you won’t find anywhere else in the world.
